Transfocality project 01 : Interlude
Put yourself in others' shoes - This project is to determine own meaning of 'Interlude'. I explored the meaning of empathy which can be something that exists between two people.
What is the relationship between the 'Empathy(interlude)' and the main event?
The social characteristics and world view of the era have a direct impact on design. Every design and cultural phenomenon is a reflection of the spirit of the times. As the industrial society of the 20th century became the background of modernism, in the 21st century, users are background of the design. As a result, I thought I needed to explore the psychological value of the user. To be more specific, there is an invisible boundary between human, as an invisible boundary in space. I focused on the phenomenon that appears when these boundaries overlap. Because each person has their own boundaries, empathy is formed when the each other’s boundaries are overlapped, and this empathy is thought to be important not only in everyday life but also in designer and user. Because of this, I wanted to explore and express empathy among people in this project.
How to explore 'Empathy'?
'Shoe talking' Workshop
I opened a 'shoe talking' workshop for final articulation.
Although I aimed to hold a workshop with a variety of volunteers, I was able to contact the people who helped with footprint collecting, which is process of my project, due to lack of time and participants, and to collect 4 participants.
The workshop proceeded as follows. I set up a conversation space in front of the camera, and then I took a film the process of two people meeting in the conversation space with swapping their shoes and talking about each other's shoes.
Interestingly, their way of communication resembled the emotions that were written in one letter at the time of footprint collecting, and they shared their experiences and emotions in each other’s shoes by talking about the shoes in their own way. As a result, I have expressed through this project the interlude of people - empathy that emerge when different boundaries are overlapped. In the external view point, it is only the people who lead the conversation and form the empathy, but through this final workshop, I emphasised that the user's psychology reflecting the social and cultural change is an important factor in design.
